
Approval to wear United Nations Special Service Medal

1. The Government of Canada has approved the acceptance and wear of the United Nations Medal for Special Service (UNSSM) in recognition of honourable service in capacities other than established peacekeeping missions and at United Nations Headquarters.
2. The UNSSM shall be worn following all other UN medals and preceding the ICSC medal in the Canadian order of precedence.
3. This medal is presently approved for three UN missions as follows:
Service with the mine clearance and education team in Afghanistan and Pakistan 1989-90. Service requirement is 90 days. Eligible personnel have already received the Canadian Special Service Medal (SSM) with PAKISTAN 1989-90 Bar for this service. Therefore, recipients must indicate whether they wish to retain this medal or request the UNSSM. If the UNSSM is requested, then the SSM with PAKISTAN 1989-90 Bar (or PAKISTAN Bar if SSM has two or more bars) must be returned to NDHQ/DHH 4.
Operation AIRBRIDGE. for 90 days service with UNHCR at support base, Geneva or Sarejevo airport, or for those personnel who participated in the delivery of supplies and who took part in 100 or more landings at Sarejevo airport during UNPROFOR (Dec 91 to 96).
UNSCOM. eligible persoonel will have been seconded to the Special Commission assigned to Iraq for a minimum period of 90 consecutive days or by fulfilling a total of 180 non-consecutive days in Iraq.
4. The ribbon is not yet in the Canadian Forces Supply System but members who have the medal may wear it at this time. For those personnel who consider that they are eligible for this medal, application should be made to NDHQ/DHH 4 through their chain of command in accordance with Canadian Forces Administrative Orders (CFAO) 18- 6, Annex B or Canadian Forces Publication (CFP) 200, Chapter 2, Annex B.
