Airmen deserve recognition for national security operations Air Force leaders want to ensure Airmen get the recognition they deserve for fighting the war on terrorism at home and abroad, and for many more operations critical to national security. That is why Air Force personnel officials are looking at better ways to apply modern air and space mission criteria to existing awards and decorations to give appropriate credit to outstanding Airmen. This new thinking is being applied to the recently created Department of Defense Global War on Terrorism medals. There are two versions, expeditionary for people deployed abroad, and service for those in the continental United States. Two new Air Force awards established in June 2002, the Gallant Unit Citation and Meritorious Unit Award, were designed to appropriately recognize outstanding unit actions in support of wartime efforts. The first Meritorious Unit Award was recently presented to the 9th Expeditionary Task Force at Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia, and Al Udeid AB, Qatar, for June 1, 2002, to May 31, 2003, for the success of the Combined Air Operations Centers supporting operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. For OIF alone, the 2,000 people in the CAOC planned and executed more than 40,000 sorties flown by 1,800 aircraft from every service and coalition partners. The Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon, approved in September 2003, gives people credit for completing contingency deployments after October 1999. The ribbon recognizes service in operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom to Airmen deployed for 45 consecutive, or 90 nonconsecutive days. af.mil 25 Aug 04
Airmen may wear medals while awaiting system updates Air Force officials want to assure Airmen that wearing eligible decorations is authorized, even if they are not currently reflected in the military personnel data system. The affected decorations include the Korean Defense Service Medal, Gallant Unit Citation/Meritorious Unit Award, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the "V" device on the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. "At this time, we do not have an estimate of when the (system) will be available for update," said Tech. Sgt. Jeff Simmons, noncommissioned officer in charge of the recognition programs branch at the Air Force Personnel Center here. "In the interim, we want to reconfirm that Airmen do not have to wait until the system is updated to wear the decorations they have earned." But officials stress that Airmen need to ensure they meet the proper criteria before wearing any new decoration. Eligibility requirements for each decoration can be found at www.afpc.randolph.af.mil/awards/Recently%20approved%20awards.htm. af.mil 3 Nov 04

Combat Action Ribbon - I'm basing this from an article in the 15 June 98 Navy Times: The criteria for the Navy and Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon will be slightly modified, due to lobbying from a senior Navy mine warfare non-commissioned officer. Master Chief Quarter Master (SW) Michael Harrison, a veteran of minesweeping operations in the Persian Gulf in 1987-1989, felt that the criteria of the ribbon did not allow it to be awarded for minesweeping action in a combat theater. The old criteria read, in part, that it would be awarded for situations "when the safety of the ship and crew were endangered by enemy attack, such as a ship hit by a mine." The new criteria will change this to "a ship hit by a mine or in an enemy minefield." A final decision is expected by the end of June. (Ref: Chris Weeks)

| DEA - Establishment of the Purple Heart Award (1996) As of January 1, 1996, any DEA Agent wounded in the line of duty became eligible to receive the DEA's new Purple Heart Award. Based on the design of the military's Purple Heart Award presented for battle injuries, the DEA emblem honors agents who suffered injuries that required medical treatment or caused death and were incurred during the performance of official duties as the direct result of a hostile or criminal action. In 1998, the DEA's SAC Advisory Committee expanded the awarding of Purple Hearts to state and local law enforcement officers killed or wounded in the line of duty while working with the DEA. NOTE: Article is almost at the end of the webpage which contains lots of interesting information on DEA activities over the years. usdoj.gov |
