Former Turkish Ambassador Presented With Japanese State Medal Japan presented Ismet Birsel, a former Turkish ambassador to Iran, with state medal as he had an important role in the rescue of Japanese citizens who were stranded in Iranian capital of Tehran during Iran-Iraq war 20 years ago. Making a keynote speech in the ceremony held at the Japanese Embassy in Ankara, Japanese Ambassador to Turkey Tomoyuki Abe said that Japan has never forgotten Birsel's contributions. Japan is presenting this medal to 49 foreigners this year. Besides Birsel, 12 Turkish Airlines (THY) staff who took part in the rescue operation will also be awarded with the same medal. The ceremony will take place in Turkish metropolis of Istanbul tomorrow. Iraq, ruled by Saddam Hussein, gave only two days to foreign citizens to leave Tehran before it launched air strikes on Iran in March 1985. Many foreign airline companies refused to carry Japanese citizens, who were stranded in Tehran, as their priority was to carry the citizens of their own countries. Then Japanese Ambassador to Iran Yutaka Nomura requested assistance of his colleague and close friend Birsel, and asked if a Turkish plane could carry Japanese citizens. Upon Birsel's demand and consent of then Turkish prime minister Turgut Ozal, a THY plane was sent to Tehran on March 19th, 1985. The plane rescued 215 Japanese citizens only hours before the air strike. turkishpress.com 18 May 06

Red Crescent to award medals to Erdogan and Sezer for service The Turkish Red Crescent has announced that it will be presenting both President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with medals in honor of their service in past years. Erdogan's medal will be presented to him on November 1, which is also "Red Crescent Day," and will be in recognition of his work following the deadly Asian tsunami, as well as in support of channeling public funding towards the Red Crescent in general, reports Trend. The medals in honor of service are to be a new annual tradition for the Turkish Red Crescent, and will be presented from now on once a year to people who are perceived as worthy of the recognition. Reports have noted that the Red Crescent has spent a "fortune" on the medals, with the two alone for Erdogan and Sezer reportedly costing the organization 21 thousand YTL, or around $15,000. trend.az 12 Sep 06
Turk academic returns French medal over genocide law The man in charge of Turkish higher education on Monday returned to France a prestigious medal in protest over a French bill making it a crime to deny Armenian genocide by Ottoman Turks during World War One. The gesture by Erdogan Tezic, chairman of the strictly secular body that oversees Turkish universities, marks the latest Turkish protest at the French lower house of parliament's vote in favour of the bill. Turkey denies any genocide, saying the Armenians were victims of a partisan war that also claimed many Muslim Turkish lives. Turkey accuses Armenians of also carrying out massacres while siding with invading Russian troops. "Although the draft has not become law, with my letter, I return one of France's highest state decorations, 'Commandeur de la Legion d'Honneur'... as I won't be able to wear it as this issue (Armenian genocide) has become French state policy," Tezic said in a letter to President Jacques Chirac. Tezic was awarded the Legion d'Honneur medal in 2004 by Chirac, becoming the first and only Turk to hold it, the powerful Higher Education Board said. As former head of the prestigious French-language university in Istanbul, Tezic received the award for services to French culture. The bill still needs approval from the upper house -- the Senate -- and the French president, who has indicated he does not support the proposal. France is home to Europe's largest Armenian diaspora. in.today.reuters.com 16 Oct 06

Turkish-Born Armenian Returns Medal Following Genocide Bill Israeli citizen Yuda Yagbes reacted to the French parliament’s passing of a bill that would make it a crime to deny an Armenian genocide by sending back his 1965 certificate and medal of “Merite Civique,” which France awards to those who represent the country best. Yagbes, 94, was born in Turkey and immigrated to Israel in 1980. Condemning France’s attitude, Yagbes commented that he never understood why the country showed so much concern for the issue. He said he felt very comfortable with his gesture, and added that if any problems occur it is strictly between Turks and Armenians. As to why he returned his medal, he replied he was born in 1912 in Izmir where he served in the army; and when a fellow Turkish recipient decided to return his medal, he was inspired to do the same thing. zaman.com 7 Nov 06 |
