The Order of the Golden Fleece (Toison D'or) is one of the most knightly and ancient in Europe, and at first consisted of 24 knights only. It was instituted on 10 January 1429-30 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgandy, on the day of his marriage with Isabella of Portugal at Bruges. The Order became common to the princes of the house of Austria as descendants of Mary, daughter of Charles the Bold, last Duke of Burgundy, who married Maximilian of Austria in 1477. It came to Spain in 1504 on the accession of Philip, Maximilian's son, to the throne of Castile. The Order had one class only. The Order, essentially aristocratic, was reserved for crowned heads, heads of foreign states, and Spaniards of noble birth. (Ref: Ribbons and Medals by Taprell Dorling)
Order of Charles III - Pictured here is the Badge of the Order of Charles III (Muy Disinguida Orden de Carlos III). The Order was institued on 19th September 1771, dissolved in 1809 by Joseph Bonaparte, and reinstituted in 1814 by King Ferdinand VII. After being again dissolved and reinstituted several times, it was finally re-established and provided with new statutes on 10th May 1942. The Order may be conferred on Spaniards and on foreigners for outstanding services to the Fatherland. The Spanish Head of State is the Grand Master of the Order. The Order has fives classes: Grand Cross with Collar, Grand Cross, Commander by Number, Commander and Knight The ribbon of the Order is light blue with a wide white centre stripe. The sash of the Grand Cross with Collar is blue with narrow white border stripes. (Ref: Orders, Medals and Decorations of Britain and Europe by Paul Hieronymussen).
Order of Isabella the Catholic - Often called the Royal American Order of Isabella the Catholic, was founded on March 24, 1815, by Ferdinand VII, as a reward for loyalty either in the kingdom or in the American colonies of Spain. Later it was awarded for merit. It was placed under the patronage of St. Isabella (1451-1504), surnamed la Catolica, Queen of Castile and wife of Ferdinand of Aragon. It was during the reign of Isabella the Catholic that Columbus discovered America, and during the reign of Ferdinand VII, the founder of this order, that Florida was sold to the United States (1819), and that most of the other American colonies were lost to Spain. One of the objects in establishing this order, apparently, was to reward certain of the American colonial officials and dignitaries. There are five grades: Grand Cross, Commander with plaque, Commander, Chevalier and Chevalier of the Silver Cross. Some authorities state that a silver medal of the order was given to a number of the American Indian subjects, though this is not confirmed. A sixth class was instituted in April, 1907, by Alphonso XIII, consisting of silver and bronze medals, 32mm. in diameter, bearing on the obverse a replica of the cross without the rays, and on the reverse the crowned monogram of Ferdinand VII. To judge from the varieties of this decoration, they were very generously bestowed and not very highly valued. (Ref: Spanish Orders of Chivalry and Decorations of Honour by Harrold E. Gillingham)
