State Awards:
The Federal Orders, Decorations and Medals were first instituted in 1958 and the first Awards were made on August 31, 1958 - the first anniversary of Independence Day. Awards are normally bestowed on the official birthday of His Majesty the Yang di - Pertuan Agong. Investures are also held on other days when Honorary Awards (of the highest order) are conferred on foreign citizens.

The order of precedence of wearing the Federation Orders, Decorations and Medals is issued from time to time by the Prime Minister's Department in the form of a General Circular Memorandum. Orders, Decorations and Medals have been classified into the following main groups:

Some of the Orders and Decorations are grouped and are arranged according to their order of precedence. The Order of precedence of Federal Honours is as follows:
Royal Family Orders
The Most Exalted Order of the Royal Family of Malaysia (Darjah Yang Maha Utama Kerabat Diraja Malaysia) (D.K.M.) - Instituted 30 June, 1966 in one Class only. The Sash is 4 inches wide and is watered red in colour. The undress ribbon is 1 1/2 inches wide and also watered.
The Most Exalted Order of Nahkota Negara (Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara) (D.M.N.) - Instituted 21 August, 1958 in one Class only. The sash is 4 inches wide, watered golden yellow with 7/16 inch dark blue edges bisected by 1/16 inch white stripe and in the centre a 7/16 inch red stripe. The undress ribbon is 1 1/2 inch wide.

Supreme Gallantry Awards and Service Medals
Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (S.P.) (The Supreme Gallantry Award) (Instituted in 1960) (Ribbon was 1 1/2 inch golden yellow with 1/8 inch red stripes at edge with a miniature of the decoration on the ribbon. In 1970, the ribbon width was changed to 1 3/8 inches wide without the miniature decoration on the ribbon).

This Order has only one Grade, Membership is restricted to 10, one each to His Highness who has been installed in office as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. The insignia consist of the Collar, the Star, the Badge and the Riband. Its motto is "Allah Jua Yang Berkuasa".
