• Saddam decorates southern soldiers with medals   President Saddam Hussein has decided to decorate soldiers who have put up stiff resistance against US and British troops in the south of the country. Two medals - the Decoration of Umm al-Maarek or the Mother of All Battles, as Baghdad calls the 1991 Gulf War, and the Wisam al-Rafidain, or Order of the Two Rivers - would be awarded to the entire 45th Brigade, which defended the port city of Umm Qasr, according to a presidential decree read on air. The 45th Brigade's soldiers would also receive medals for bravery, it said, adding that special decorations would be awarded posthumously to those killed in the fighting. Medals for bravery would also be awarded to fighters confronting coalition troops in Nasiriyah, some 350 kilometres (220 miles) south of Baghdad, and in the southeastern Fao peninsula, which British forces say they have secured.

• Iraq honours suicide bombers Two Iraqi women who carried out a suicide car bomb attack which killed three US soldiers are to be decorated posthumously by President Saddam Hussein. Nucha Mjalli Al-Shammari and Widad Jamil Al-Duleimi died blowing up a checkpoint near Hadithah Dam, 200km north-west of Baghdad. • Iraqi fighters earn medals from Marines Five members of the Iraqi Civil Defense Force are in line to receive Marine medals and commendations for saving a U.S. Marine's life. The five ICDC members were patrolling with a Marine platoon on May 30 near Al Karmah when the platoon was ambushed by Iraqi insurgents, who hit one Marine in his leg. The fighters continued to fire at the downed Marine when the five ICDC members sprang into action and dragged the Marine to safety. The ICDC members ultimately routed the insurgents from their ambush site until other Marines and ICDC members could make their way to the scene of the attack. First Marine Division Commander Maj.   • Corps bestows valor awards to Iraqi soldiers who saved Marine Top Marine Corps commanders in Iraq bestowed valor awards June 11 upon five Iraqi Civil Defense Corps soldiers credited with saving the life of a Marine when their joint patrol was ambushed in May. The awards, two Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals and three Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals — all with combat “V”s — were presented. According to award citations provided by 1st Marine Division, the Iraqi riflemen and members of Charlie and Bravo companies, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, from Camp Pendleton, Calif., came under fire about 9 p.m. May 30 in Kharma, a village near Fallujah. When gunfire struck one Marine in his lower left leg, ICDC Pvts. Kather Nazar Abbas and Imad Abid Zeid Jassim rushed to his aid and dragged him to safety. The Iraqi soldiers’ gunfire and fire support from three other Iraqi troops ultimately drove the gunmen from the area. Both soldiers’ “decisive and aggressive action and superb performance under fire were far above expectation” for soldiers of their rank and experience, officials said in a written summary of the actions for which the two were awarded the commendation medals.Their “quick thinking and brave actions clearly helped save the life of the Marine and turned the tide of the ambush,” their award citations read. Three other ICDC soldiers — Sgt. Abdullah Sadoon Isa, Cpl. Eiub Muhamad Hussane and Pvt. Ahmad Lazim Garib — each received a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V.” mnavytimes.com 11 Jun 04

• Bulgaria's Defence Minister Decorates with Medals Iraq's Attaches Defence Minister Vesselin Bliznakov awarded Iraq's Military attaché to Bulgaria Major General Mahmoud Karim and his deputy Col. Rubad Al-Zibari for their contribution to the development of the bilateral relations in the military sphere. • Saddam medals on show in SA - A South African soldier's passion for military memorabilia led him to buy a set of medals belonging to executed Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein - and they are now on display in Johannesburg. "Medals tell the story of a country. The medals are very, very colourful and the medals and medallions tell a story," said William Endley, a retired national defence force colonel now working for a United States de-mining company. In mid-2004 he was working in Iraq when he was offered a set of Saddam's awards by a former soldier who probably bought them from a Baghdad medals dealer. Endley immediately bought the collection. "It was quite an expensive little exercise." In January, he loaned Saddam's medals to the SA National Museum of Military History where they are on display to the public. The collection is in excellent condition and includes sashes, medals and orders. There is a photograph of Saddam, taken more than 20 years ago and wearing full dress uniform with his awards. Museum staff say there has been great interest in the collection, particularly from military experts. "It's quite a coup," said museum spokesman Allan Sinclair. Museum acting director Sandi MacKenzie said it was unusual to get such a collection so soon after the original owner's death or fall from power. "It normally takes us 100 years to get something like this." Experts believe the collection is genuine. MacKenzie explained that heads of state often have duplicate sets of medals and orders, for travelling. MacKenzie said the first four medals Saddam was awarded were for gallantry and these he got before taking power. "He earned them as a soldier would earn them." His awards include the rare Wisam al-Jadara or Order of Merit - awarded to only three or four Iraqi rulers - and for the 1948-'49 Palestinian War, for crushing the Kurdish rebellion, for the 1963 and 1968 revolutions, for co-operation with Syria, for peace in 1970, and for the 1973 war with Israel. His Order of the Mother of Battles has a star and a sash in the red, black and white of the Iraqi flag with "Allah Akbar" (God is Great) on it, for the 1991 Gulf War against Kuwait and the US. Saddam received the Order of the Two Rivers, which Endley described as the piece of which he was proudest. This was a civilian and military award, and had republican and royal versions.   Iraq - I've received an Image of US General Petraeus supposedly wearing an Iraqi ribbon (it's the last ribbon). According to the. General's biography, it could be the Gold Award of the Iraq Order of the Date Palm. Please email me if you can provide addtional information.This item has generated a lot of interest. It has become quite evident that General Petraeus IS NOT wearing the ribbon of the Order of the Date Palm from Iraq. The last ribbon being worn by the General is in fact the ribbon of the French Médaille Commémorative Française. For those who did not spot it, General Petraeus is also wearing the ribbon of the US State Department Superior Honor Award (next to the National Defence Service Medal). Here is a image of General Petraeus' Ribbon Bar created by Lukasz. I still have not receive any information on the Order of the Date Palm from Iraq, so would appreciate any information.
