| Louis Cha awarded French honor of arts Prolific author Louis Cha and 13 prominent Hong Kong personalities received the French honor of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of their significant contributions to furthering the development of French arts and culture in Hong Kong and China's mainland. The French Minister of Culture and Communications Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, who presented the honors at a ceremony here, awarded Louis Cha the high rank of Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Louis Cha, whose novels have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, has a long and distinguished career in literature. He is an honorary professor at five universities and has won many international honors, including medal of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur from the French government. The other 13 personalities were awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of their work on the 16-member Honorary Committee-Hong Kong of "The Year of France in China." Seven named to Honours Committee Leung Chun-ying, Cheng Yiu-tong, Charles Lee, Dr Leong Che-hung, James Kung, Edward Chen and Raymond Ch'ien have been appointed as Honours Committee members for 2006. Chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration, the committee considers all nominations for recommendation for an honour or award, which are given to individuals in recognition of their significant contribution to Hong Kong and for their dedicated public and community service. Chief Executive presents honours to 265 people Chief Executive Donald Tsang presented honours and awards to 265 recipients. Among the recipients, three received the Grand Bauhinia Medal. They are Charles Lee, Leo Lee and Tung Chee Hwa (pictured left). Six received the Gold Bauhinia Star, three received Medals for Bravery (Gold) (two were family members of respective recipients), 21 the Silver Bauhinia Star, 44 the Bronze Bauhinia Star, and 10 received Distinguished Service Medals for Disciplined Services and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Meanwhile, 47 people were awarded Meritorious Service Medals for Disciplined Services and the ICAC, 60 the Medal of Honour, 40 the Chief Executive's Commendation for Community Service and 31 the Chief Executive's Commendation for Government/Public Service. Director Wong Kar-Wai inducted into French Legion of Honor in Cannes France's culture minister inducted Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai into the Legion of Honor on Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival, praising him for inventing a new language of cinema. The "In the Mood for Love" director, who is president of Cannes' jury this year, was named a knight of the Legion of Honor. "You invented a new form of cinema, a new language, a new form of writing in ink and in lighting, which have moved audiences and paved the way for a new generation of filmmakers," Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres told Wong. daily.news.ro 22 May 06
