Abdullah conferred Chile’s highest award Malaysia New Straits Times group editor-in-chief Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad was conferred Chile’s highest award, the Gran Cruz de la Orden al Merito de Chile. The conferment of the award by Chilean ambassador to Malaysia, Roberto Ibarra, was witnessed by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Deputy Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen. 4 Chinese receive Chilean presidential medals Four Chinese people, including Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, received the Chilean Neruda Presidential Medal. The medals, honoring Pablo Neruda, a renowned Chilean poet and a Nobel Prize Winner, were conferred on Li and three other Chineseexperts engaged in the translation and research of Neruda's works. Pinochet selling medals to pay expenses Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet has been selling some of the medals and diplomatic decorations he received in his political and military career to pay for personal expenses, a newspaper reported. Pinochet, 90, is facing economic difficulties because the judge investigating the source of his multi-million pound bank accounts abroad ordered his money frozen. A spokesman for Pinochet, retired Gen Guillermo Garin, expressed doubts about the report that Pinochet had been selling the items. According to the paper, wealthy businessmen who are admirers of Pinochet have bought the former general’s memorabilia to help him.
