  • Seniors Matter: Honours keep rolling in for decorated veteran Retired captain John Langton has another honour to add to a long list of achievements in a stellar military career. Highly decorated for his service in the Indian Army in the Second World War and for his ranks in two Crusades-era medical orders, Langton became a Knight Commander of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. He was already a Commander of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. All these military and medical medals are quite appropriate for Langton, because while he wasn’t in much immediate danger in the wartime Ordnance Corps or supply service in Assam, India, a Japanese booby trap after the war cost him his left hand in British North Borneo. He also has an Indian independence medal. The Kingston Whig-Standard, Canada - 2 Jun 2003

The order is limited at all times to 65 members plus the Queen. Membership is conferred on men and women for services of national importance. Pawson is only the fourth Canadian to receive the award, joining late prime ministers Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau as well as Gen. John de Chastelain, the former head of the Canadian Armed Forces who has served as head of decommissioning efforts in the Northern Ireland peace process. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000 and awarded the Order of Ontario in 2005. thestar.com 4 Jul 06

NS to create medal to honour those who perform heroic acts Nova Scotians who risk their lives to save others may soon be honoured with a new medal. Premier Rodney MacDonald has introduced legislation that would create the Nova Scotia Medal of Bravery for those who risk life and limb in an emergency. The premier says it's a way for the province to thank people and to hold them up as 'models of Nova Scotian values.' MacDonald says an advisory council will be set up to establish criteria and to select eligible candidates for the medal. He says those who will be eligible must have performed a heroic act after Jan. 1, 2007. The first award ceremony will likely take place early in 2008. hfxnews.ca 20 Mar 07
