Red Cross honours Delysia Goff for 18 years of volunteer nursing She’s volunteered 18 nursing years of her life to the Belize Red Cross Society and on May 30, Belizean Delysia Goff was honoured with an award held only by retired nurse Audrey Courtenay. At a ceremony at the Belize Red Cross, Governor General Sir Colville Young, presented Goff with the Florence Nightingale Award. The medal which is silver gilded with a portrait of Florence Nightingale in the middle, is given by the International Committee of the Red Cross to nurses or volunteers who have given excellent service and commitment to the organisation. According to Goff, who has been with the Society since May of 1988, she is honoured to have served the organisation and would do it again. “I have Red Cross in my heart, I sleep and when I awake I think of Red Cross and if an emergency should arise, I will find the strength to go out and serve.” A humble Goff recalled when she entered into the service she was never seeking grandeur. “This honour that I am receiving today was not really one of my goals. My goal was to work for the people of Belize.” At 73, Goff is now retired. Born on Wilson Street on the North Side of Belize City, she became a nurse in 1953, with a major in Paediatrics from the then Belize Hospital School of Nursing. In 1973 she became the Principal Nurse, the highest position held in nursing at the time. She served her profession well until 1988 when she retired. reporter.bz 8 Jun 07 |
