• Two knights of honour Businessman Allen Stanford (right) and cricketeer Viv Richards (left) were among three receiving Antigua's highest national award. Stanford was conferred with a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation (KCN) and will now be known as Sir Allen. Richards, already named a National Hero, was conferred with a Knight Companion of the Most Exalted Order of National Hero (KNH). A third was awarded posthumously. She is Nellie Robinson, whose lifetime work as an educator afforded many Antiguans and Barbudans the opportunity to get an education at her TOR Memorial School. She was conferred posthumously with a Dame Companion of the Most Exalted Order of National Hero (DNH). • Roberts receives Independence Day honours Legendary West Indies pacer Andy Roberts and sprint champion Brendan Christian were among 54 people honoured by the Antigua & Barbuda government during its 26th Independence anniversary celebrations. Roberts, who spearheaded the famed four-pronged pace attack in the 1970s and 1980s, was the recipient of the Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit KCN, the country's third highest award. Christian, a gold medallist in the 200 metres and bronze winner in the 100 metres at July's Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, received the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage. Sailor Karl James, who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Central American & Caribbean Games, was another athlete honoured. He received the Grand Cross of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage GOH. Another sailor, Hugh Bailey, who helped to pioneer the country's popular Sailing Week regatta, was awarded a Knighthood. Austin Edwards, a retired veteran umpire at the national and Leeward Islands level, became a member of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage. jamaicaobserver.com 2 Nov 07
• Antigua to strip accused Stanford of knighthood Antigua and Barbuda is set to revoke the knighthood it gave Texas financier Allen Standord, who is awaiting trial on charges he operated a $7 billion fraud using his bank on the twin-island Caribbean nation. Antigua and Barbuda's Labor, Public Administration and Empowerment Minister Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, who chairs the country's National Honors Committee, said a recommendation to strip Stanford of the knighthood had been sent to Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack.  "Sir" Allen Standord received the knighthood conferred by Antigua and Barbuda's government in 2006, at a time when he was the tiny Caribbean country's biggest foreign investor and a major sponsor of cricket and other sports in the region. Stanford denies the charges and is awaiting trial in the United States.  Quinn-Leandro told CANANEWS that the six-member honors committee had voted unanimously to strip Stanford of the knighthood. She added that the move to revoke the knighthood was not based on a judgment of Stanford's guilt or innocence but on the embarrassment brought to the nation by his indictment. If the governor-general signs the withdrawal of Stanford's knighthood, a move seen as a formality, it would be the first time that Antigua and Barbuda has revoked such an honor awarded to an individual. reuters.com 2 Nov 09
